The Process

1tsking mould

Step 1 : Taking the moulds

Once you’ve made an appointment, you will be invited to our home studio where the moulds are taken.

This involves dipping hands/feet into a warm gel like solution. The solution will solidify within 1.5-3 minutes and will take a full impression of the body part.

Whilst the gel is setting, it is important to remain as still as possible to obtain a good mould that is usable.

The appointment takes roughly 30-40minutes as the solution is warm and freshly made after each attempt. Some casters use a cold solution which makes the process faster, but this can sometimes upset little ones. At Precious Prints we believe that casts taken from a relaxed little one are the best and you could also get an open hand if you’re lucky!

Step 2: Ta-Dah!

The casts are made using the mould and the best part is the reveal! Once the hardened gel is pulled apart, the fragile cast is carefully released.

Step 3 : Perfection

This process can take 1-2 hours and involves using fine tools to remove any bubbles and artefacts from the cast.

The cast will sometimes have missing areas which will need filling. Finally the casts are filed and given some extra definition to give them the professionally finished look.

Step 4: Seal-paint-re-seal

The casts are dried for a significant amount of time to prepare them for sealing. This is an extremely important step as it prevents the casts from deteriorating over time. The sealant used is a carefully made solution perfected over time by Shabana.

The type of sealant used is different for chrome finished casts and upgrade finished casts. We don’t take shortcuts!

Once the sealant has dried, the casts are then painted in either a smooth chrome finish (rose gold/silver chrome/matt gold) or they are given an upgraded finished (copper/rose gold upgrade, pewter or brass)

When the paint has dried, they are resealed to prevent the paint from flaking over the years. This whole process takes 3-4 hours.

Step 5 : Framing

All our frames are custom made which means the best size frame is used for your casts.

It’s important that the casts are not set in a disproportioned frame, so using the casts, the best window size is calculated which determines the overall size of the frame.

The casts are then stuck into the frame using a strong adhesive and completed with the engraved name plaque. And there you have it, a special and unique keepsake to cherish for a lifetime.
